The Student’s Guide to Using AI in Assignments

How to Use AI Ethically, Effectively & Without Risking Your Degree Updated February 2026 | zaio.io

What Just Changed - February 2026

Turnitin upgraded their AI bypasser detection model this month. This is not a new feature it was first launched in August 2025. But the February 2026 update made it significantly more accurate. If you were slipping through the gaps before, those gaps are now smaller.

Timeline: 2023 - Turnitin launches AI writing detection July 2024 - They add AI paraphrasing detection (QuillBot, etc.) August 2025 - Full AI bypasser detection launched February 2026 - Detection model upgraded. More accurate. Fewer gaps.

Bottom line: The ‘write with AI, humanize it, submit it’ workflow is now significantly riskier. This guide shows you the right way to use AI so you never have to worry about this.

1. Understanding How Turnitin Detects AI

Before you can use AI safely, you need to understand what Turnitin actually looks for. It is not magic - it is pattern recognition.

What Turnitin Analyses

The Score System You Need to Know | Score Range | What It Means | Risk Level | | :— | :— | :— | | 0% | No AI detected | None | | 1% - 19% | Flagged with asterisk (*%) — Turnitin considers this UNRELIABLE | Low-Medium | | 20% - 49% | Moderate AI signal - likely triggers a conversation | High | | 50% + | Strong AI signal — likely triggers formal investigation | Very High |

□ What Most Students Don’t Know

Turnitin themselves flag scores between $1-19 \%$ as unreliable. They mark them with an asterisk (*%). But most lecturers are not aware of this distinction. They see ANY flag and assume risk. Your AI score also appears on your lecturer’s dashboard BEFORE they open your essay. They see a risk score next to your name before reading a single word.

2. The Right Way to Use AI in Your Assignments

Using AI is not the problem. Using AI dishonestly is. Here is the framework every student should follow.
